![]() Sometimes it is necessary to control carpenter bees causing damage. Synthetic surfaces such as vinyl or HardiePlank™ siding are not damaged by carpenter bees. If practical, remove severely damaged wood and it replace with chemical pressure-treated wood to deter nest construction. Wood stains provide little repelling action. Unfortunately, painting or placing polyurethane on wood decks or log homes is often not a desirable option. The most effective deterrent to carpenter bee activities is a painted surface. Unpainted, exposed wood is especially attractive to carpenter bees. Also, woodpeckers feeding on the developing bee larvae will tear into the galleries, further damaging the wood to the point where it needs replacing. In addition, the open holes allow water intrusion that also can create considerable moisture damage over time. Nest sites by a single bee result in slight damage, but repeated colonization over several years may result in considerable damage. Normally, the gallery will extend about four to six inches, but with repeated use, galleries have measured ten feet long. The excavating bee will bore directly into the wood with her mouth parts for about an inch, then turn sharply and bore at a 90-degree angle, usually along the grain of the wood. Homeowners often notice a buzzing or burrowing sound coming from within the wood. Unsightly stains caused by falling bee waste around the entrance hole may also develop. An early sign of carpenter bee damage is coarse sawdust that collects beneath excavated cavities during the spring of the year. Unfortunately, they also can be pests around homes, causing considerable structural damage when they repeatedly colonize exposed wood. The egg hatches and the larva (grub stage) develops into the adult, which chews through the cell partition and emerges in late summer.Ĭarpenter bees are good pollinators and should not be harmed. A female will mix pollen and nectar to form “bee bread,” lay an egg on the ball of bee bread and seal off each cell with chewed wood pulp. Each gallery (or tunnel) will hold six to eight cells. Females may use old abandoned nest tunnels or excavate new galleries to lay her eggs. The adults emerge in early spring to mate and search for nest sites. Because carpenter bees are solitary bees, they are less defensive of their nest sites whereas, bumble bees are extremely defensive when their nest site is disturbed.Īdult female and male carpenter bees overwinter in abandoned nest tunnels where they have stored small amounts of pollen. Bumble bees are social bees that develop colonies of dozens of sister bees that nest in the ground. Carpenter bees are solitary bees that nest in excavated wooden tunnels. It is important to distinguish between carpenter bees and bumble bees because they behave very differently. Carpenter bees have few hairs on the abdomen, making them look “shiny,” while bumble bee abdomens are very hairy and “fuzzy” looking. The quickest way to tell a carpenter bee from a bumble bee is by looking at its abdomen. Actually, there are many species of bumble bees and carpenter bees, each with unique color patterns, but most carpenter and bumble bees are yellow and black. Homeowners often mistake carpenter bees with bumble bees because of their similarities in size and appearance. While these traps will collect carpenter bees if properly installed, traps often do not provide total control around a structure, leaving other carpenter bees to continue to do damage.Įric Benson, ©Clemson Extension, Clemson University. There are several commercial and homemade traps where carpenters crawl in and cannot get out. Males have a white or yellow blaze on their face, while females have a dark face. The female has a stinger but is not defensive and rarely stings. Although the male behaves aggressively, it does not have a stinger, making it harmless. ![]() The male carpenter bee is very territorial and protects its nesting sites, hovering nearby and attacking intruders. Homeowners are often frightened by these pesky black bees that fly erratically around their homes. They naturally nest in dead trees and woodpiles, but they also bore into exterior wood on buildings, fences, decks, and outdoor furniture. These insects earn their name because they bore one-half inch wide holes that appear to be perfectly round on exterior wooden surfaces. Carpenter bees are very active from early spring through summer around houses and other wooden structures. Spring is here and so are the carpenter bees. To participate in the survey, see Carpenter Bee Survey. This information will help them develop improved management options for the future. You can help by providing feedback in their survey, which should take just 10 to 15 minutes to complete. ***North Carolina State University is doing research about eastern carpenter bee management on private property.

The plastic bird, as Price has written, “had become a signpost for the transgression of social and cultural convention.”Īll the while, Pop art and its celebration of mass-produced imagery was making its way into the art-historical canon. Then, in 1979, a group of University of Wisconsin–Madison students covered the lawn outside their dean’s office with 1,000 flamingos-a playful affront to the administration. Before long, the lawn ornament was popping up in gay pride parades. ![]() In Waters’s “Pink Flamingo,” a yard dotted with plastic flamingos served as the backdrop for a story about a bold, brash drag queen. “Before that, only the wealthy could afford to have bad taste.”īy the 1970s, members of the American counterculture had latched onto the bird as not only a symbol of tackiness, but of resistance to cultural norms. ![]() “We sold people tropical elegance in a box for less than $10,” he told the Chicago Tribune in 2007, when asked why he thought his flamingos flew off the shelves. Featherstone himself admitted this was an important ingredient of the lawn ornament’s success. “And art critics promptly pegged it as a prime example of the despicable spread of kitsch.”īut instead of faltering under the criticism, the plastic flamingo’s popularity thrived on its reputation as a symbol of kitsch. “Working-class homeowners readily planted it on their modest lawns-a nod to the marble or bronze sculpture on vaster properties,” recalled historian Jenny Price in 2006. But they were just as quickly reviled as markers of bad taste. They were an instant hit, selling by the thousands and spreading over suburban yards across the country. The listing came with the helpful description: “Place in garden, lawn, to beautify landscape.” They were sold in pairs, via the Sears catalog, for $2.76 a box. Later that year, the forms emerged from the Union Products factory in sunset-pink plastic, complete with wire legs sharp enough to pierce even the thickest, fertilizer-saturated lawns. It took Featherstone about three weeks to sculpt the birds from clay, adding hooked beaks and ridges representing feathers. In one, the bird stood tall in the other, it was bent over, in the midst of snacking. Featherstone chose two images of birds from the article (titled “Ballerinas in Pink”) to work from. But as luck would have it, National Geographic published a feature on the crane-necked creatures at just the right time. Live flamingos weren’t easy to come by in Worcester (they’re native to South America, Africa, and according to a recent study, the state of Florida). Featherstone’s higher-ups were pleased with the results, but it was was his next task-to come up with a design for a pink flamingo-that defined his career (or, as The New York Times has quipped, “blew his duck out of the water”). After placing the duck carefully in the sink so that he could sketch it, he released it into a park. He wanted to do it right, so he bought a live version of the aquatic bird and brought it home. His first assignment was to sculpt a plastic duck (the resonance between his last name and his professional affiliation with fowl was never lost on Featherstone). That decision launched what would become his life’s work. So when he got wind of a job opening at Union Products, a local company specializing in plastic lawn decorations, he applied. ![]() He loved sculpting, but had no burning ambitions to establish his own studio. “Because you’re not getting out alive anyway.”įeatherstone was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1936, and graduated from the school of the Worcester Art Museum at the age of 21. “You don’t take yourself too seriously,” he’d often joke to his wife. It’s also become synonymous with Featherstone himself, an artist who enthusiastically embraced his legacy as the progenitor of a splashy, mass-produced product. The pink flamingo is a barometer of taste the brunt of jokes the city of Madison, Wisconsin’s official bird a symbol of LGBTQ pride and the titular inspiration for a fabulously naughty 1972 cult film by John Waters. In the process, it’s become more than just a flamboyant decorating device. Since then, the Phoenicopterus ruber plasticus, as Featherstone playfully anointed his creation, has been reproduced more than 20 million times. But that’s precisely what he did, several months later, upon hatching the plastic pink flamingo-that neon totem of tropical tackiness. When Don Featherstone graduated from art school in 1957, he had no intention of creating the world’s most famous (or infamous, depending on who you talk to) lawn ornament. I hope you love this easy gluten-free apple crisp as much as my family and I do. Slightly tart apples baked to perfection underneath a crisp buttery oat top that caramelizes around the edges as it bakes. This gluten-free (and secretly vegan) apple crisp is everything that I adore about autumn. It’s easy, warm, and so totally delicious. This secret step is going to keep the apples super juicy and make an apple-esque type gravy sauce in the bottom that practically oozes autumn apple yum. After the apples have been prepared and combined with the cinnamon, flour, and sugar and arranged on the bottom of the dish, I gently pour the milk over top. If in a pinch, coconut oil will also work but note that the apple crisp will carry a faint coconut taste. Earth Balance, Melt, and Miyoko are also wonderful dairy-free butter alternatives. I adore using a plant-based “butter” alternative such as Becel plant-based baking brick. Butter, which is traditionally used in apple crisp, is swapped out for a dairy-free counterpart. This, as easy as making a gluten-free apple crisp, is just as simple. Place the sliced apples in a large bowl and pour over the cinnamon sugar. 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 4 tablespoon sugar, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg. Oats, while naturally are gluten-free, are often processed with machinery and in facilities that work with gluten, so making sure the oats are certified gluten-free is a must to be on the safe side. Place the cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg for the apple filling in a small bowl and mix. Second, grab certified gluten-free rolled oats. You’ll want to make sure it contains xanthan gum which provides the elasticity that gluten would normally do. In the Apple Crumble recipe below, besides all-purpose flour, I additionally use almond meal (this is my secret element). First, swap out the regular flour for a 1:1 gluten-free baking blend. To make an apple crisp gluten-free is far easier than you might think. I’m all for experimenting though so give it a whirl with what you got. These varieties are often quite firm which hold up well to baking. I prefer using all tart apples, such as a Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. So, I’ll start by saying my way is not the highway. Here’s where things get a bit particular. On top, is a layer of crispy/crunchy oats, brown sugar, and flour baked to utter scrumptious perfection. The bottom consists of peeled, sliced, and spiced apples. That sounds about right to me! It’s quick, easy, and totally delicious. The best part, it’s easily gluten-free and even vegan! What Is Apple CrispĪccording to Canadian Living, apple crisp is a baked fruit dessert topped with a layer of crisp and crunchy ingredients. Soft juicy apples that burst with autumn delight in every single bite. The bubbling of caramelized brown sugar around the toasted edges of the golden-brown oat crisp top. Thank you for supporting CAKED by Katie. And seeing as the weather is cooling rapidly, I relished every warm bite of this tasty fall treat. There’s something truly comforting about a freshly baked apple crisp. Gluten-free apple crisp that is! Truth be told, it’s actually secretly vegan too but you wouldn’t even know it because apple crisp is 1000% delicious. ![]() Since posting this in 2012, we have tweaked the recipe to be more clear and added a quick recipe video.A, B, C. ![]() Recipe updated, originally posted December 2012. Our Apple Pie Cupcakes have spiced apples in the middle and a cinnamon roll base (so good!), take a look at how we make homemade granola, or check out our easy recipe for carrot cake. Since you’re here, you may also enjoy one or more of these simple recipes. We use this same topping to make these cinnamon baked apples as well as our ridiculously easy blueberry crumble! In our updated recipe, by starting with melted butter, the topping stays put and crisps on top of the apples. It tasted great (how could it not, right?), but it wasn’t exactly what we were looking for. ![]() When we used the old method with un-melted butter, we noticed that during baking, the topping would melt down over the apples and into the filling below. We were looking for a tender topping with a little crunch - something to balance the softened apples. This method works well, but we think we’ve found a better way. Using our fingers or a fork, we’d work the butter into flour and oats until crumbly. For the topping, we use melted butter. Spend a few minutes searching “apple crisp recipes” on the internet and you’ll notice most recipes call for cold or room temperature butter. Generally, the recommended solder paste is the melting point temperature of the solder paste plus 20-40☌. In the reflow section, the peak soldering temperature varies depending on the solder paste used. In this area, the heater temperature is set high, so that the temperature of the component rises rapidly to the peak temperature. The temperature setting method of the reflow section of the reflow oven: At the end of the heat preservation section, the oxides on the pads, solder balls, and component pins are removed, and the temperature of the entire circuit board reaches equilibrium.ģ. Give enough time in this area to make the temperature of the larger component catch up with the smaller component, and to ensure that the flux in the solder paste mixer is fully volatilized. The main purpose of the heat preservation section is to stabilize the temperature of each element in the SMA and minimize the temperature difference. The heat preservation section of the reflow oven refers to the area where the temperature rises from the melting point of the solder paste from 120☌ to 150☌. Temperature setting method of reflow oven insulation section: The typical temperature rise rate is 2☌/S.Ģ. However, the ascent rate is usually set to 1~3☌/S. To prevent thermal shock from damaging the components. Due to the faster heating rate, the temperature difference in the latter section of the SMA is larger. The solvent volatilization is insufficient, which affects the welding quality. ![]() If it is too fast, the thermal shock will occur, and the circuit board and components may be damaged and too slow. ![]() The purpose of this area is to heat the PCB at room temperature as soon as possible to achieve the second specific goal, but the heating rate must be controlled within an appropriate range. Temperature setting method of reflow oven preheating section: The reflow oven temperature setting is to set the reflow oven temperature curve.ġ. This is very useful for obtaining the best solderability, avoiding damage to components due to over-temperature, and ensuring soldering quality. The temperature curve provides an intuitive method to analyze the temperature change of a component during the entire reflow soldering process. The reflow oven temperature curve refers to the curve of the temperature of a certain point on the SMA with time when the SMA passes through the reflow oven furnace.
Sidearms are made up of pistols, which aren't quite as strong as most of the other weapon types, although they do have their advantages at certain points. It may be worth upgrading your HP if you use shotguns a lot since you'll regularly be within the damage range of your enemy's weapon. Shotguns deal damage to multiple enemies that are next to each other, but their core downside is that they can't damage enemies in middle or far range, which makes them ineffective if you prefer to hide behind cover or don't have a lot of HP.Įven with this disadvantage, shotguns are one of your best choices for guns that deal high DPS, which makes them worth considering if you enjoy staying within close range of your enemies. However, Precision Weapons also tend to have less ammo per magazine, so you'll have to hit most of your shots to use these guns effectively. You can deal a ton of damage with each shot from a Precision Weapon, which is great if you don't want to reload after defeating a single enemy. You can use this weapon type at a range much further than other weapons, so you should consider picking one up if you prefer staying behind cover instead of rushing into battle head-on. Accessible Design StandardsĪ useful reference is the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), which provides design standards to help people with disabilities, including guidelines for bathroom design. ![]() Another option is to install a grab bar near the tub entrance, plus install the tub into a surround with a wide ledge on which a person can sit and rotate their legs into the tub. ![]() If you do want to include a bathtub, one option is a specialty walk-in tub that contains a small door. Other universal design ideas include a handheld shower and several grab bars. If you add a bench to the shower, one good option is a fold-up bench that can be moved out of the way if needed. The shower entry should also be 36” (91 cm) wide and ideally flat (curbless) or so that a wheelchair can roll directly in. The recommendation is generally 36” (91 cm) wide and 60” (152 cm) deep. Additionally, the shower space should be generously sized, as a caregiver or spouse may need to help with the bathing process. Shower and Bath ConsiderationsĪn accessible bathroom floor plan often includes a shower rather than a bathtub for easier access and safety. This is helpful for many users as it requires less strain on the back and knees as one sits and stands up. Additionally, consider a “comfort height” toilet which is taller than the standard height. In front of the transfer space, allow a 60 inch (91 cm) turning circle for rotating the wheelchair. Additionally, leave about 40 inches (102 cm) to one side of the toilet to allow transfer space from the wheelchair to the toilet. The toilet’s centerline should be 18 inches (46 cm) from any side wall to allow space for a grab bar. Space Around the ToiletĬlear space in front of and next to the toilet is very important to be able to roll a wheelchair close and facilitate a transfer. In addition, the floor area below the sink should be completely clear, and be sure to insulate any exposed pipes. These measurements can all be adjusted for the specific user. The recommended open area is 28 inches high (71 cm) measured from the floor to the bottom of the counter, 30 - 36 inches wide (91 cm), and 11 to 25 inches (64 cm) deep, measured from the front of the counter. In addition, choose either a pedestal sink or a vanity with an open area underneath (rather than drawers or cabinets) to allow the wheelchair user to roll directly up to the sink. That being said, if you are designing a bathroom for a wheelchair user, the sink should generally be mounted at a lower 34 inches (86 cm) as any higher will not be accessible for a seated person. Depending on your height, you may want a 36 inch (about 91 cm) vanity height so that you don’t have to hunch over. When standing at the sink, you don’t want to have to bend over too far. The sink and vanity counter height is an important consideration for mobility. The turning radius should be 60 inches (152 cm) in diameter. The symbol demonstrates the clearance needed to turn a wheelchair. You may notice a circular wheelchair symbol on accessible bathroom floor plans. ![]() Additionally, a completely flat threshold at the door entry is ideal for smooth rolling access. If you don’t have quite enough space for such a wide door, at a minimum, choose 32 inches (81 cm), which can still accommodate a wheelchair or walker if needed. This will allow easy access for a standard wheelchair, which is 24 -27 inches wide (approx. Most bathroom guides recommend that an accessible bathroom door be 36 inches (91 cm) wide if possible. ![]() There is strong interest in the superhero genre, with ten films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe featuring among the nominal top-earners.
